Anger Management

Anger Management

Anger is a natural human emotion and the body's built-in response to perceived threats, injustice, stress, or disappointment. While anger itself is not harmful, unmanaged or destructive anger can negatively affect your relationships, health, career, and overall quality of life.

At Wilmington Mental Health, we offer anger management therapy and classes in Wilmington, NC designed to help individuals understand, regulate, and express anger in a healthy effective way.

Understanding Anger

From an evolutionary psychology perspective, anger is a protective defensive mechanism that provides strength during moments of fear, vulnerability, or powerlessness. However, when anger becomes overwhelming or leads to impulsive reactions, it can create long-term challenges.

Anger management therapy focuses on prevention, control, and skill-building, allowing you to deploy anger productively rather than destructively.

Why Do We Experience Anger?

Understanding the root causes of anger is key in learning how to manage it effectively. Anger can arise for many reasons, including:

Chronic stress or overwhelming life demands

Sleep deprivation or exhaustion

Workplace pressure or job dissatisfaction

Feeling blocked from important goals

Feeling disrespected, misunderstood, or treated unfairly

Unmet emotional or physical needs

Learned behavior patterns used to release tension

Attempts to control or manipulate situations

Feelings of injustice or powerlessness

When Anger Becomes Harmful

Destructive anger or rage can feel uncomfortable and may lead to regret, conflict, or harmful consequences. While it is normal to feel angry, it becomes problematic when it results in behaviors that negatively impact yourself and others.

Learning to take responsibility for how anger is expressed and how it affects those around you is an essential part of anger management therapy.
